Tannen vs Graff

Tannen vs. Graff

I liked Tannen’s short story much more than Graff’s because Tannen’s was witty and made me take a different look on things. I liked Tannen’s because she was kind of loopy and didn’t get straight to the point but ended up getting there eventually. Tannen’s use of metaphors and the way she portrays them are very interesting. She shows how we use some metaphors and what they actually mean in the English language and how they should be used. Another thing Tannen did was show us how if we change a minor word in the sentence how it can change the whole meaning of the sentence. I will use the car example how she said the cars “bumped” into each other and then how she said the cars “smashed” into each other. The whole meaning of the sentence changes because it becomes a lot more extreme when someone says that the cars smashed instead of just bumped. Graff’s short story I did not particularly enjoy because there was no thinking to the story it was just all criticism. Graff seemed to rip Tannen’s essay but have no actual real knowledge to his own short story. Graff’s story was just to slow for me and did not have anything intriguing in any way at all.
