Orwell's views on English
Is our English language really getting that bad? I agree with Orwell on this but I also have my own theories on why our word choice is getting poor. With all of the Facebook and blogging that our generation is doing helps assist in making our writing poorer and poorer as the days go on. We try and limit ourselves on what we say into 160 characters or less to satisfy blogging sites so we are used to getting our point across in a few short words. Most of these words are abbreviated such as using "u" rather than "you" to make your caption shorter. Orwell pointed out some good tips towards the end of the piece that will help me in my future writings, and hopefully get a better grade. Orwell said that we should use more metaphors within our pieces and I believe that we should start using metaphors more often in our writings. I like metaphors, because they give you more of a deeper meaning to a piece that helps you understand it better. I agree and disagree with Orwell on the fact that "If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out". I usually put in extra words to make my writings longer so it is great for me. But when it comes to the reader, they often get bored because there is almost to many filler words. There are a few things that I will be taking out of Orwell's piece "Politics and the English Language," One being that I need to "cut out" more words that aren't necessary, another being that I need not to use long words when short words will do just fine. I also need to stay away from getting in the mindset of blog posting mode within my different writings.
