Samantha Hoeltge Colleges fight with Google ads: Blog Spot I have to say that I totally agree with this article, and that I’ve had personal experience with false website advertisements, not just through Google but through almost any search engine. I remember when it came time for me to start looking at colleges, and when I had a basic sense of where I wanted to go or a school sounded interesting to me, I thought it would be as simple as typing in the listed school and getting what I was looking for. I couldn’t believe how ridiculous it was to find the actual school website. And in all honesty it’s not just with the college websites, this type of website fraud happens to almost anything you can think of to type into a search engine. I can’t help but pity the students who actually fall victim to these false sites, all but thinking that they’re going to send their information to the college they want to go to, when in fact they’re sending their information to random places. That’s really a terrifying thought. How is that individual supposed to know that their personal information won’t get into some nut jobs hands? There are people in today’s world that can use someone’s basic information and find out anything they want about them. I know that the article stated that although the sites used were college based, just that they were sending the persons information to the wrong schools, but who’s to say that some sicko isn’t making up their own personal fake college sites. Everyone wants to trust college websites, I mean who wouldn’t? People aren’t very careful these days, it’s so easy to be careless with personal information and unfortunately everyone is always at risk, and the internet makes it all too easy for the bad guys. On another note, I never really did consider the other side of the story, like how the false ads can really screw up a college’s credentials. They expect students to be able to trust them, especially with how much students have to pay to attend college, and if a student can’t even feel safe on a colleges website (even without really knowing it’s not the colleges legitimate site) than that school could have potentially lost a great potential student. It’s a frustration today that the internet is such a war zone today. You can never really trust it and its just becoming a giant disappointment. The internet used to be a reliable tool, but now its just becoming a giant lie. |
