Tannen and Graff

After reading Tannen’s short essay on metaphors I actually begain to think about metaphors and how we use them today. Like she gave an example of not to pussyfoot around, this actual meaning of the word and the way that we use it in our English language are totally different. Also what I realized is that if we put different describing words into sentences it totally changes things around. Tannen was saying the whole thing with the cars “bumping” into each other rather than saying that the cars “smashed” into each other, changing that one word makes the story totally different. After reading Graff’s short essay I still agree with Tannen on the points that she made with the different war metaphors. Graff is pretty much just tearing everything that Tannen had said apart. All that popped out at me while I read Graff’s was where every sentence that he wrote said Tannen did this, Tannen said this, then Graff seemed to critique it. I didn’t like Graff’s writing at all, it seemed boring and dry, nothing that I could actually connect with and make sense of. He was basically just critiquing her writing.
