The Theory of 'Selfish' Thought
Wallace, in this exerpt does bring up some valid points about the way we think. Personally, I value my intellect and I do, in fact, fear people thinking otherwise. I do see everything in my way as just that, in MY way. However, Wallace seems to fall short when talking overall about our "default setting." Many people view things as being in their way when they are actually in their way. Think about it like this. Yes, a man cutting you off might be on the hospital with his injured son, but does that affect you at all? No, it doesn't. You are on your way to the grocery store and the fact that this man just cut you off is in fact getting in your way. I don't mean to sound cynical, but if something is hindering your progress, it is natural to assume that something is hindering YOUR progress. People see things from their own point of view because they literally can only see from their point of view. If you can literally see from another person's point of view, then you are some sort of magician and should start a career in such a field. For the rest of us, we are stuck with selfish thoughts because we, as humans, are creatures of and for ourselves.
