For some reason, I can't leave a comment on the post, so I'll just make a new post in response to the work.
I felt like you and I were going about saying the same thing, except you used "self-love" while I used the word "selfish". I think the purpose of my paper would've been more supported if I had chosen to do "self-love". So really good job there.
Anyways, I really enjoyed how you touched upon the fact that it's hard to explain what "self-love" is because it's different to every person. It's really difficult to tackle a subject that is so complicated. Afterall, this is basically talking about the immense and crazy mess that is the human mind. We all know that people can't read minds, and yet, we act as if they should be able to at the same time.
I believe Wallace was trying to explain to us is that the individuals leading their own lives adds up to become the image of the human race. Whether we turn off that switch or not, we are still living for oursevles. The only thing that changes is whether or not we help those around us while we go about living our lives.
