Hardwired Existence

After reading David Foster Wallace's address I was left with more questions then answers. What I took from the reading was Life is an existence where every action and decision is a bit by bit preparation for death. As if from birth we're hardwired to proceed without question to the next task of our routine of life.
I'll ask a simply question. Do you stop to question if what you're doing matters? If not, are we capable of being totally in control of our life?
Wallace uses the example of fish in water, they never stopped to examine their environment they live in. It parallels the population of today, so many of us have never simply stopped to ask why. We have developed perpetual tunnel vision. So how do we break free? Is it as simple as taking a moment to question anything and everything. As Socrates had done to open the eyes of the young men of Greece.
Perhaps being left with questions, was the beginning of my eyes opening. So will you open your eyes?
