Facebook who needs it

My 24 hours without technology wasn't too different from the normal day. I've never had the urge to keep looking at my phone or computer repeatedly unless theres a task at hand. Todays youth is so concentrated and feels the need of always being updated and aware of new things. It was actually quite a relaxing day I spent the majority of it outside skating the Burton bowl when I didn't have class.

When I think about Facebook, I think of a drug. I think of a bunch of creeps hovering over their computer getting their Facebook fix. I'm sure not many users are like that but I can say that there are a good amount of them that spend most of their day on their computer scanning Facebook for updates and statuses, and on their phone. I've definitely have seen people who actually bug out when they aren't able to access Facebook when they want to. On the Facebook login page it says, "Facebook helps you connect and share with the people in your life". Sure you can talk to family and friends, but do you need Facebook as a means to socially be connected to them? Whats wrong with phones or possibly even get off of the computer and see them in real life? They need to feel updated with the world.... One status at a time.

Now I'm sure not all Facebook users are stalkers, the ones who do use it to benefit in some way other than creeping on it have good reasoning. I know that Facebook is a super good tool of finding new music, videos, events and it's also one way faster to hear about news than an actual news station on television. It's an instant update. I think that if people spent more time caring and looking for useful resources on Facebook rather than who's in a relationship with who, Facebook would be a lot different.

I had a Facebook at one point a while ago and I just couldn't take it anymore. The amount of stalking and creeping that is available is pretty amazing. Sure it was great to be able to see what my buddies are up to in Colorado and so on, but it gets to a point where I think 90% of what people read on Facebook is unimportant and unwanted.

Facebook has it's ups and downs for sure, but I am perfectly content on the way I am connected with my family and friends without it.

What I think about life without technology

For Sojourn, a civil rights movement trip I went to my junior year in high school, I had to go 10 days without a computer, cellphone or iPod but I was perfectly fine with that. However for this assignment I found myself wanting to crack many times. I stopped myself because I really didn't want to do the facebook assignment. I wrote down how I was feeling through the 24 hours and I noticed that I'm a lot more irritable without the internet.

I started at 8:30 at night. I wanted to at least catch a glimpse of the Wild @ Senators game because Dany Heatley would be returning to Ottawa for the second time since he got traded and that always spurs hate from the fans. I ended up not finishing the game because I just wanted to start my 24 hours. I turned the wifi off on my phone and put it on airplane mode so that all I could use my phone for was the iPod, since you did say that music was allowed. I was a lot less motivated to do my homework because as a way to ensure that I get my homework done I say I’ll go on tumblr or some other site after I get this assignment done. Since I didn’t have that reinforcement I just didn’t want to do my homework and just go to sleep instead. I was really annoyed that I couldn’t check the scores for the hockey games.

It also made life really inconvenient because if I wanted to meet up with friends in the dining hall during the 24 hours I had to make sure that everything was planned out so that I could find them without actually needing my phone to do that. I got annoyed when I couldn't text my friends about how we talked about hat tricks in Intro to Psych. I woke up badly when I realized I couldn't text my friend to make sure we still had breakfast plans.

I also realized how I use the internet as my outlet for my aggression. I tend to send tweets when something annoys me so that I don't actually have to say it out loud. Not having that out let I was more irritable for the 24 hours.

I noticed how dependent I am on using the internet to make sure I get all my feelings out and I don't have a problem with that at all. I would rather use the internet as my personal journal than to actually talk out loud about my feelings because then I would feel like I'm bothering people.

I like my technology and I don't plan on giving it up again anytime soon.

24 Hours too Long

I always thought that I wasn't that depended upon my facebook, cell phone, or really any other communicative device. Well through this little assignment I was definitely proven wrong, I felt like I lost a limb. If I ever again have a choice as to whether or not I can give up my technology, my answer is definitely going to be Hell No!
I will say this that in the 24 hour period (that I was not sleeping) I did a ton of homework, and because I felt like a seriously had nothing else to do I ended up starting some of my projects for classes ahead of time. Now in general that is not such a bad thing, but like 5 hours of homework straight is pretty pathetic. I didn't realize how badly so much of my social life depended on technology, at least I can blame some of it on the fact my best friends went to schools so far away.
I think that I followed this assignment better than I thought I would. But to be honest I definitely caved...a little. My weakness was my cell phone. I didn't turn it off, thinking that something serious would happen with my family and just because it would be the one time I wasn't available. So to be on the safe side I left my cell phone on, but just kept it on the desk...then I saw that little blinking red light, which of course meant I had a message. I couldn't resist, it was some friends from home telling me they were finally able to come and visit me at school. I still can't decide if I feel bad about answering the text and thus failing the assignment or just glad because I finally managed to see some friends from home.
With this type of assignment I can't imagine how it must have been for the kids who like have their phones attached to their hands always using it. Besides having an irrational fear that my family would need to reach my, not using communicative technology was relatively okay, I just never want to do it again.
This was definitely an eye opening assignment, I'm finding it hard to imagine how people survived without all of the things at my generations disposal today. Well needless to say I am so glad that this little experiment is over, and glad that I have all of my technological toys back at my disposal. I'm curious to see how everyone else in class fared compared to me.

Facebook friend

The friend I chose to analyze was my cousin Ashley. Ashley was born March 11, 1993. She is A female attracted to men but married to a girl name Maddie. She has 679 friends and likes Lady Gaga and Cotton picking. She has 748 photo’s of herself. She is attending catholic university in Washington and is from South Berwick, Maine.
Judging by her information I would say she seems like a pretty normal gaga loving college student. As we move on to her photo’s she has a lot of boob shots. This tells me she likes to flaunt it a little bit. She also has a ton of pictures of her in Greece. So I can assume she went to Greece. Being that she loves lady gaga she also has a number of shots as her dresses up like her, lightning on her face and all! She also has a lot of pictures of her horse Luna. The album is titled in loving memory so we can assume her horse past away. She also has an number of photo booth videos. She has one were she is doing a yeti call. This consists of her sitting on the porch and screeching. Has her acting a scene from “ No country for old men.” She has yet another with her just talking on the phone!
Judging by her Facebook I would say that she is fun to be around because of the amount of friends she has. She really needs attention as well she seems to love the camera! She also has a mass amount of pictures of herself going to clubs and such so I would say she likes the club scene. There is a picture of her also going to the twilight premier so we can assume she's one of those twilight fans! Other then that she seems pretty normal. Its funny I picked her to analyze cause she is actually the craziest person I know but her face book seems so normal! Trust me though the girls insane.

Technology

So I accepted the challenge of not using technology for 24 hours and it was extremely difficult for me. I am used to being able to check facebook to see what my friends are up to and if anyone has "poked" me and what not. I am used to being able to text and check the time on my phone. I am used to being able to go to weather.com and see how Vermont's climate is slowly becoming the bane of my existence, and I am used to being able to use to watch my favorite TV series at night. I am used to being able to push shuffle on my ipod and let The Kooks take me away for hours on end.
All of these actions and thing are such a norm in my life at first i had a realization that I was/am far to dependent on electronics everyday in my life to complete brainless tasks. I had no idea what I was going to do aside from eat sleep and repeat, but then i remembered "hey, I play guitar!" So, i currently just got done playing for about 4 hours and it was fantastic. This challenge really helped me because it made me realize that I need to prioritize what is important to me in my life, and that is what I need to make time for, doing what I love. it was an epiphany to say the least.
On a larger scale if this challenged spark all this inside me, and lead me to a realization I believe that we as Americans and everyone around the world are becoming to reliant on our techno devices, regardless if its a GPS or automatic back scratcher. We need to disconnect and unplug ourselves to truly become more social and enjoy life. I refuse to end up in a Bruce Willis movie like Surrogates.

24 Hour Text Less

Going 24 hours tech less was not hard for me. The thing that I do the most is text my family in Rhode Island and watch Netflix. The only hard thing was not texting my grandfather in the morning. He texts the entire family every morning to say good morning and have a wonderful day, and every morning I text him back. Another hard thing was not having the time. My phone is the only source of time I have when I am not in my dorm room and the entire 24 hours that were not spent sleeping and in the dorm were basically time-less as well. When I turned on my phone I had 14 text messages and 7 new emails. Another hard thing was no internet. Most of the time I don’t go onto the internet unless I want to look up something and i am always thinking about how something such as a lava lamp works and I can’t just flip open my computer and find that out. Another hard thing was not being able to find guitar chords but I survived and just did the same song over and over again. But I really enjoyed the freedom of not having to make sure that my phone was with me in case anyone needed to get ahold of me. So in all it wasn’t too hard it was just really interesting and to be honest I enjoyed it very much.

Go head and have a wife !!!

At the beginning of the article, the author admits that "she belongs to the wives classification" and theses thoughts about being a wife come to her mind while she was "ironing." Based on what she said," ironing" is what women do, nonetheless she still needs a wife, someone who can do it for her.
Being born and raised in the 1900th when being a wife means taking care of the children, doing the housework and keeping track of everything. When women were out aside by society, Judy Brady, In my opinion must have related to how she sees the women-world at that time period. As she points out "wives" or women were seen more like slaves or personal objects and less like Human. Accordingly, they are the ones who stay home, take care of her husband physical needs and not complaining about wife's duties.
This article, in my opinion, is a rant. By pointing out the way women are being defined by her society, she, as a woman, is asking who would not need a wife is this is the way they are treated-- as slaves, sexual instruments with no rights. If this is what a man want a wife for, she is basically telling that she also wants a wife. Because, who would not need someone to take care of his/her personal needs while he/she is being a lazy. Who would not be happy to have a a mate, a housekeeper, a baby sitter and a servant? I think, she is basically criticizing the society or men in general.
"Why I still want a wife" relates partly to Judy's lifestyle and what she wants to change about it.
